Preventing Measles in Texas

Introduction

Texas is currently experiencing its most significant measles outbreak in decades, with 146 confirmed cases, 20 hospitalizations, and a tragic fatality involving a school-aged child who was not vaccinated. Given the highly contagious nature of measles, proactive cleaning and disinfection are essential to reducing its spread—especially in homes, workplaces, schools, and government facilities.

As a nationwide leader in janitorial and facility maintenance services, The CoBuilders is committed to helping residential, commercial, and government clients implement enhanced cleaning protocols to protect their environments.

Understanding Measles Transmission

Measles spreads through respiratory droplets when an infected person coughs or sneezes. Alarmingly, the virus can remain airborne for up to two hours and survive on surfaces, making high-traffic areas particularly vulnerable.

Without proper cleaning and sanitation, workplaces, schools, healthcare facilities, and public buildings become hotspots for transmission. Texas officials warn that the state’s measles outbreak is escalating, with experts citing a drop in vaccination rates as a contributing factor.

While vaccination remains the most effective defense, cleaning and facility maintenance serve as the second line of protection, significantly reducing the virus’s ability to spread in shared spaces.

How The CoBuilders’ Janitorial Services Can Help Prevent Measles

To combat the measles outbreak in Texas, The CoBuilders’ professional cleaning and facility maintenance services focus on the following key areas:

1. Targeting High-Touch Surfaces

Since measles can persist on surfaces for hours, high-contact areas require frequent disinfection. Our team prioritizes:

✔ Doorknobs & Handles – Frequently touched by multiple individuals.

✔ Light Switches – Often overlooked but commonly used.

✔ Restroom Fixtures – Including faucets, soap dispensers, and flush handles.

✔ Shared Electronics – Keyboards, mice, office phones, and touchscreens.

✔ Common Area Surfaces – Tables, countertops, armrests, and shared seating areas.

2. Using EPA-Approved Disinfectants

We exclusively use EPA-registered disinfectants proven effective against viruses like measles, Hepatitis B, and HIV. Following CDC and OSHA guidelines, we ensure proper application methods and dwell times for maximum disinfection.

3. Increasing Cleaning Frequency

Given the severity of the outbreak, we recommend increasing cleaning schedules:

🏠 Residential Cleaning – Disinfect daily, especially in homes with children or frequent visitors.

🏢 Workplaces & Offices – Implement multiple cleaning cycles per day, focusing on breakrooms, conference rooms, and shared equipment.

🏫 Schools & Public Facilities – Continuous cleaning throughout operating hours is advised.

4. Educating Cleaning Staff & Occupants

The CoBuilders provides specialized training to ensure cleaning staff and facility occupants follow best practices:

✔ Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) usage for janitorial staff.

✔ Correct disinfectant application and dwell times for virus elimination.

✔ Hand hygiene awareness for building occupants.

With public concern growing, experts warn that a lack of proper cleaning and disinfection could further exacerbate the crisis (Houston Chronicle).
